Sonya Childress is the Community Engagement Specialist at Firelight Media. For more than a decade, she has has helped organizers, educators, service providers, policy makers, philanthropists and filmmakers use film to further social justice. She has worked with California Newsreel, Active Voice, Kartemquin Films, Working Films and ITVS. She has developed discussion guides and managed engagement campaigns for numerous films including Freedom Riders, The Interrupters, and Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes.

Reel Justice

How can film and interactive media advance work for racial justice and equality? This session will focus on leveraging documentaries – online and off – to amplify your messages, reach and rally communities, build coalition, influence decision makers, and move your mission forward. The workshop will offer a framework, specific case studies, and time for planning and discussion about using visual storytelling as an asset in you work. Featuring excerpts of the new and award-winning films Freedom Summer, Come Hell or Highwater: The Battle for Turkey Creek, The Hand that Feeds, and community driven screening initiatives like MORAL MOVIES and Coal Ash Stories.
