Banning the Box – Leading with Race

Minnesota and Seattle have successfully implemented Ban the Box policies to ensure that people with conviction and arrest records have an opportunity to gain employment. These policy victories were won by low income communities of color who kept racial equity front and center in the organizing campaigns. In this workshop we’ll discuss how leading with race impacted the strategies used, shaped the campaigns, and strengthened policy. In this workshop you will learn how to make the case for racial equity in all your organizing work using story, data and racial equity analysis tools.

Racing the New Economy: A Long-Term Structural Reform Strategy for Structural Equity

National People’s Action has developed a 40-year agenda to create a new economy in the United States. At the center of the Long-Term Agenda to the New Economy (LTA) is creating structural equity. By building a broad progressive infrastructure with the power to win five structural transformations we can win a racially just economy. This session will break down NPA’s LTA and our strategy for exposing the role of structural racism in creating the current economy. Participants will identify opportunities to advance their own racial justice work by applying this long-term structural reform framework.
